Immediate dentures — leave with new teeth the same day.

When teeth need to be removed, an immediate denture means you’re never without a smile. The denture is ready before your extraction visit and placed the moment the teeth come out.

How an immediate denture works

You shouldn’t have to go weeks without teeth when a full set of extractions is on your calendar. Your immediate denture solves that. You’ll come in for digital impressions of your existing teeth and gums before any extractions are scheduled, so we can design a denture that mimics your current smile and have it ready for the day of surgery.

On extraction day, the teeth come out and your new denture goes in immediately. Your new denture also acts like a bandage over your gums, helping to control bleeding and shape the tissue as it heals.

The healing window — what to expect

Your gums and the underlying bone will reshape significantly over the first six weeks, and continue settling for 6 to 12 months. Your immediate denture won’t fit perfectly during that period — that’s expected. You’ll come in for several follow-up visits so we can relieve sore spots and place soft, temporary relines that restore comfort along the way.

Who’s a good candidate

You’re likely a candidate if multiple teeth need to come out and you’d rather not be without teeth at any point. Patients from across the Shenandoah Valley often choose this route when an upcoming work event, holiday, or family milestone makes the gap unworkable. Your overall health and the condition of the jawbone we’re extracting from determine the design.

The transition to a permanent denture

Your gums and bone will typically stabilize 6 to 12 months after extractions. You’ll then have a conversation about either a final denture (custom-made for your now-healed anatomy) or an upgrade to implant-retained dentures for a much more secure long-term fit.

Caring for an immediate denture at home

  • Leave it in for the first 24 hours to control swelling and bleeding
  • Follow your home-care instructions for rinsing and gentle cleaning
  • Stick to soft foods (eggs, yogurt, soup, smoothies) for the first week
  • Take it out at night once cleared by us — usually after the initial healing window
  • Keep all post-op visits so we can adjust the fit as your gums heal

You’ll have a direct number to call between visits if a sore spot lingers, the bite shifts, or anything unexpected comes up — small adjustments early prevent bigger ones later. You’ll also get a printed guide on what to expect during the first six weeks of healing so you know what counts as normal and what doesn’t.

Common questions

How does an immediate denture work?

We capture impressions and design your denture before any teeth are removed. On the day of extraction, the denture is delivered immediately so you never go without teeth. As your gums heal, we'll reline the denture to keep the fit accurate.

Will I need a permanent denture later?

Often, yes. Immediate dentures are technically transitional — your bone and gums change shape significantly during the first few months of healing. Once everything has stabilized (typically 6 to 12 months), a final denture or implant-supported option gives the best long-term fit.

How long does the healing process take?

The first six weeks involve the most rapid change as the gums shrink and reshape. Full bone healing takes 6 to 12 months. We'll see you for several follow-up visits during that period to relieve sore spots and add temporary relines as needed.

Will my speech and eating change right away?

Yes — both take a couple of weeks to adjust. Read aloud at home and start with softer foods cut into small pieces. Most patients feel close to normal within three to four weeks.

Is an immediate denture more expensive than a regular denture?

There's a modest additional cost because the design and lab work happen before your extractions, and you'll need temporary relines during healing. Many patients find the trade-off worthwhile to avoid being without teeth.
