What preventive care covers
Preventive dentistry is everything we do to keep your teeth and gums healthy — before they need to be repaired. At our Medical Park Drive office in Fishersville, your comprehensive visit includes:
- A professional cleaning to remove plaque and tartar above and around the gumline
- A tooth-by-tooth exam by your dentist
- Low-dose digital X-rays as needed to check between teeth and below the gums
- A periodontal evaluation to measure gum health and pocket depths
- An oral cancer screening — visual and tactile
- Home-care coaching tailored to what we’re seeing
For kids
Your child gets the same comprehensive care, with extra attention to growth and bite development. You’ll hear from us about sealants when the first molars come in, fluoride based on cavity risk, and brushing technique that actually works at home. We aim to make every visit a comfortable experience so kids grow up relaxed about the dentist.
For adults
Your standard six-month interval works well for most adults. You may benefit from a tighter recall rhythm — every three or four months — if you have a history of gum disease, frequent cavities, or certain medical conditions (diabetes, dry mouth, immune suppression). Your tighter rhythm pays off in fewer big procedures over the years.
Who benefits most from preventive care
You benefit most when preventive care starts before there’s a problem to chase. Patients across Fishersville, Staunton, and the wider Shenandoah Valley who keep a steady twice-yearly rhythm typically need fewer fillings, fewer crowns, and far fewer emergency visits over the long run — small issues get caught while they’re still small.
At home — the basics that earn their keep
- Brush twice daily for two minutes with a soft-bristled brush
- Floss (or use a water flosser) at least once a day, ideally before bed
- Use a fluoride toothpaste — and a fluoride rinse if you’re cavity-prone
- Limit between-meal snacking on sugary or sticky foods
- Drink water throughout the day to support saliva flow
You’ll get tailored guidance at every visit so the routine you actually do at home matches what your mouth actually needs.
What to expect at your first preventive visit
You’ll start with a medical and dental history conversation, followed by digital X-rays only if they’re due. You’ll have a full periodontal evaluation, a thorough cleaning, and a tooth-by-tooth exam. You can expect plain-language findings before you leave — anything that needs follow-up will be prioritized so you know what’s urgent and what can wait.
No insurance? You still have a path.
