Professional teeth cleanings — the foundation of everything else.

A routine cleaning every six months is the highest-impact, lowest-cost dentistry you'll ever do. It catches small problems before they're big ones and keeps your home routine actually working.

What a routine cleaning actually does

Plaque is the colorless, sticky film that builds on your teeth every day. Brushing and flossing remove most of it — but not all. The plaque you miss hardens within a couple of days into tartar (also called calculus), a porous mineral deposit that's bonded to the tooth surface. Tartar can no longer be removed by a brush; it has to be lifted off with ultrasonic and hand instruments by a hygienist.

That's the core of the prophylaxis appointment — and it's what keeps tomorrow's gum disease from happening today. Left in place, the bacterial film inside tartar irritates the gums into chronic inflammation, eventually pulling them away from the teeth and forming pockets where the infection deepens. Caught early at a routine visit, it's a 45-minute fix instead of a long-term problem.

What you'll get at a hygiene visit

  • Complete plaque and tartar removal — above and just below the gumline, on every surface of every tooth
  • Periodontal screening — pocket-depth measurements that catch gum disease before you'd notice it
  • Polishing — surface stain removal that brightens your smile by a shade or two
  • Fluoride varnish — for higher-risk patients or after a deep cleaning
  • Comprehensive exam by your dentist — tooth-by-tooth check, oral cancer screening, bite check
  • Plain-language home-care coaching — what's working, what isn't, and what to try next

What patients tell us they appreciate

You'll see most of the same hygienist over time, which means your home-care coaching gets more specific each visit instead of resetting from scratch. You'll also see what we see — your X-rays and intraoral photos appear on the screen next to you, with plain-language explanations from your dentist. No surprises on the way out.

If your gums need more than a regular cleaning — bleeding on probing, deeper pockets, or a history of periodontal disease — your hygienist will recommend periodontal maintenance instead. Different procedure, different schedule, same calm team.

Cleanings & exams: questions patients ask most

How often should I have a professional cleaning?

Twice a year — every six months — is the right rhythm for most patients with healthy gums. If you've been diagnosed with gum disease, your hygienist on Medical Park Drive will move you to periodontal maintenance every three or four months instead. The right interval is the one that catches problems before they become procedures.

How long does a cleaning take?

Plan on about 45 minutes to an hour for a typical hygiene visit, including a comprehensive exam from your dentist. New-patient visits and patients with heavier buildup may take a bit longer. We don't run on a stopwatch — your hygienist will take the time your teeth and gums actually need.

Will the cleaning hurt?

For healthy gums, no — most patients describe a routine cleaning as a strange tickly sensation and not much more. Some sensitivity is normal if it's been a while since your last visit, and your hygienist can adjust technique, use a topical anesthetic gel, or slow down if you'd like.

Do I really need X-rays at every visit?

No — X-rays are taken on a schedule based on your individual cavity risk and history, not at every visit. The American Dental Association guideline is bitewing X-rays every 12 to 36 months for most adults, more often for higher-risk patients. We use low-dose digital X-rays at our Fishersville office, which deliver a fraction of the radiation of older film systems.

What if I haven't been to a dentist in years?

You're welcome anyway — no judgment, no lecture. Your first visit will be a thorough evaluation to see where things stand: a full set of X-rays, a periodontal screening, an oral cancer check, and a clear written plan with the most conservative options first. Many patients are relieved to find the picture isn't as bad as they feared.

Will the cleaning whiten my teeth?

It will remove surface stains from coffee, tea, red wine, and tobacco, which makes most patients' smiles look noticeably brighter on the way out. It won't change the underlying color of your enamel — for that, ask about professional whitening. The natural brightness you see right after a cleaning is your starting point.
